ODH shares survey updates and citation trends

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) shared during a call today with the associations that they are averaging about 50 standard annual surveys a month for nursing homes and intermediate care facilities. The number of backlog complaints include 78 nursing home complaints, 33 residential care facility complaints which involve about 40 providers across those 111 backlog complaints. A new immediate jeopardy trend that ODH is seeing is in post-mortem care. They have cited three immediate jeopardies under the neglect F-tag 600 due to egregious lack of post-mortem care over a significant period such as more than one day.

The three most common life safety inspection issues being cited include citations related to issues with keypads locking the door on delayed egress doors, penetrations in smoke barriers, and smoke damper inspections not being inspected annually with the fire alarm system. ODH noted that facilities may experience an additional number of surveyors if there are numerous complaints being reviewed or due to surveyors being trained in the full survey process.

LeadingAge Ohio will review the most recent immediate jeopardy citations and additional specifics shared by ODH on recent citations during the May STAT: Survey Tips and Tactics call.
